Black Chia Seeds
300g

General Information

Nutrition & Benefits

History

Chia is native to Mexico’s central valleys and belongs to the sage family. Chia, often gifted to the Gods, was the third most consumed plant source after corn and beans by the Aztecs and Mayans, who were the first to cultivate the seed.

The chia was rediscovered in the 1990s after having been ignored for centuries, and has been consistently rising in popularity since.

Culinary Uses

Chia seeds are light in taste which makes them easy to integrate in your daily diet as they do not alter the flavour of your dishes. Add chia to smoothies, juices, and other beverages, or throw them in your soups, salads and sauces. Sprinkle chia on your oatmeal, yogurt and cereal, or use chia in your cake recipes as a substitute for eggs or as a thickener.

EGG ALLERGY? Chia seeds are an excellent substitute for eggs! Soak 1 tablespoon of chia in 3 tablespoons of water for each egg your recipe requires. For best results, use ground chia seeds.

Preservation

Preserve in a cool dry place protected from light and humidity for up to 24 months.

Origin

Mexico/Paraguay/Bolivia/Argentina

Did You Know?

Chia seeds were once used by the Aztec warriors as a survival food due to its richness in protein and nutrients. It was said that one tablespoon of chia could sustain a warrior for 24 hours, which is likely why the word chia is Mayan for “strength”.

Did You Know?

What is a probiotic?

The word probiotic literally means "for life." Probiotics are live microorganisms (either bacteria or yeast) that, when consumed in adequate amounts, have a beneficial effect on the host beyond basic nutrition.

A food is considered probiotic if it contains a sufficient quantity of probiotics and if all probiotic properties are maintained throughout the life of the product (alive in sufficient quantities to provide beneficial effects). ProactivChia is a probiotic chia.

Health benefits – What can this product do for me?

Probiotics contribute to healthy gut flora, while chia is a source of Calcium, Iron and Omega-3.

How to take the ProactivChia?

ProactivChia can be use as regular chia. It can be added into your favorite dishes: cereals, yogurts, smoothies, juices, salads, dressings and more. However, do not heat this product as the live probiotics will be compromised.

Proper storage conditions – Where do I keep it to ensure maximum survival of the probiotic?

For optimal preservation of the probiotics, keep the ProactivChia in the refrigerator or in a cold place, away from direct light. ProactivChia can also be stored on the shelf.

Can I cook the ProactivChia?

No. The probiotic strains will not survive under conditions over 35°C. And will therefore not provide the benefits effect of probiotics.

What is the difference between shelf stable probiotics and refrigerated probiotics?

Generally speaking, probiotics react to temperature; the higher the temperature gets, the faster they get inactive so the overall amount of probiotics reduce over time. In the same way, the 2 probiotics strains contained in our ProactivChia are unstable at a high temperature. Since our product is shelf stable, the amount of probiotics it contains reduce throughout its shelf life. To minimize this effect, we add organic sunflower oil in our production process, allowing to isolate the strains and to protect them against more aggressive temperatures. This way, we can preserve our product longer at an ambient temperature. There is no difference between refrigerated and shelf stable probiotics. Our production process is what allows us to offer a shelf stable product. That’s how we can assure that a portion of ProactivChia contains 4 billion of probiotic bacteria.

Why do you add sunflower oil?

The Organic sunflower oil is the adhesive for the probiotics on the chia seeds.

Why does ProactivChia contain soy?

During the manufacturing of the 2 strains of probiotics included in ProactivChia, cultures are required for development. The cultures we use contain soy.

Nutrition & Benefits

History

Cultivated by the Aztecs and Mayans, the chia seed was an integral part of their daily diet. Following the Spanish conquest, the chia culture almost completely disappeared. This disappearance can be explained by both political and religious reasons as chia seed was also used as a form of currency and as a means of sacrifice in religious rituals.

Culinary Uses

It is not necessary to grind the chia seeds to enjoy its benefits. It is incredibly easy to eat the chia seed! In muffins, soups, salads, sauces, smoothies, cereal , oatmeal, yogurt ... The taste of chia seed is very light so you can incorporate it into your meals without altering the taste of your dish. Egg Allergy? Chia seeds can be used to replace eggs in recipes by incorporating 2 tablespoons of chia for each egg. For best results, use of ground chia seeds.
