TOP 15 TIPS FOR HUNGRY GHOST FESTIVAL

1. Do not kick the temporary altars by the side of the road. During the 7^th month there will be lots of praying offering and altars along the side of the road. Do not kick them as its will offends the spirits. If you accidentally step upon the offerings, do apologize to the spirits.

2. Prayers and offerings must be carry out outdoor as you do not wish the hungry spirits to stay with the residents,

3. Do not play in water / pool / ocean, as it may offend the water spirits.

4. During the Hungry Ghost Festival, one should not response or turn around when your name is being called from behind.

5. Never open umbrella indoor as spirits will take shelter inside the umbrella.

6. Each offering must have an incense stick; else the spirits can see but cannot take or eat

7. Do not pick unattended red packet, as they may be meant for the spirits.

8. Do not pat on others shoulder, as it will affect the protection barrier surrounding the person.

9. Do not curse and swear everywhere, as the spirits may mistook they are been targeted. Its consider rude and disrespectful to both living the dead

11. Do not peep under the offering or altar tables. spirits are everywhere and they lure around the offerings.

12. When there is a Getai Show, do not sit in the first few rows. The seats are left empty for a reason. The spirits only gets out once a year and they deserve to be entertained with the best seats during the show.

13. Do not stay out till late at night. Best to stay indoor during the festival especially at night as that is when Yin in the surrounding gets weaker as the day move into the late night.

14. Normally people do not travel during this period. While they are out, the spirits will be travelling too .

15. In general most will avoid making big decisions like getting married, purchasing properties and cars or launching business etc. They may attract unwanted attention from the spirits whom may bring bad luck or at worst harbor within their new acquisitions.
