What is Pu-Er Tea?
Pu'er or Pu'Er is a variety of fermented tea produced in Yunnan province, China, and named after the town of Pu'er. Fermentation in the context of tea production involves microbial fermentation and oxidation of the tea leaves, after they have been dried and rolled. This process is a Chinese specialty and produces tea known as hēichá (黑茶), commonly translated as dark, or black tea.
Why Pu’Er Tea?
Pu’er Tea has long been valued in Chinese herbalism for its vast benefits. Pu'Er tea (pronounced ‘poo-air’) contains high levels of polyphenols (flavonoids, catechins and theaflavin), which are known for their antioxidant activity. These powerful chemicals speed up fat burning as well as reduce stress and heavy metal consumption due to the cell repair compounds found within. The theanine and flavoids found within Pu'Er just so happen to aid in digestion after meals by acting as a sponge and accelerator for fat burning.
Some amazing health benefits of Pu'Er Tea:
Reduction in Cholesterol
New studies with Pu'Er tea and health benefits have made a startling discovery; the microbial aging of Pu'Er tea can result in the production of small amounts of lovastatin, a natural statin. In the synthetic form, lovastin is commonly used to treat high cholesterol. Additional studies have shown that long term use of appropriate amounts of Pu'Er teas have the potential to lower LDL cholesterol (the bad cholesterol) and increase HDL levels (the good cholesterol). There have also been some cases where extensive use of Pu'Er has resulted in a drop of nearly 100 points in cholesterol levels. Please note, if you have a medical condition such as high cholesterol, please consult with your doctor and follow their treatment guidelines.
Cleansing
In traditional Chinese herbalism, Pu'Er tea is considered to open the meridians, ‘warm the middle burner’ (the spleen and stomach) and be beneficial to ‘blood cleansing’ and digestion. Many things that are found in our diet, even healthy foods, contain acids and other free radicals that can build up in the body over time. These deposits then get transferred throughout the body in the blood, making it beneficial to consume Pu'Er tea to help cleanse the blood of toxins. The micro-organisms and unique simple sugars that are produced from the Pu'Er fermentation process have been shown to attack the toxins in the blood, removing them from the body and creating a healthier you.
Aids in Digestion
The stomach and intestines break down food through a combination of acids and healthy bacteria. The micro-organisms that are present in Pu'Er tea have shown to increase the healthy bacterial flora in the stomach and intestines, which may aid in proper digestion of foods. For this reason, it has been found beneficial to consume Pu'Er tea after heavy meals to aid in better digestion.
Aids in Weight Loss
Studies have shown that Pu'Er tea significantly suppresses fatty acid synthesis (FAS). This means that it can literally block your body from producing more fat. Pretty cool, right? The process of lipogenesis (creation of fat by the liver) is blunted by using this traditional tea. On top of that, the caffeine found in Pu'Er triggers your body to secrete the hormones epinephrine and norepinephrine which are shown to increase mobilization of stored fatty acids in fat cells. This enables your body to have easier access to use those stored fatty acids as fuel (and not keep it on your belly). Lastly, Pu'Er has been clinically proven to enhance cellular levels of hormone-sensitive lipase (HSL) which effectively blocks visceral fat accumulation. HSL is a critical enzyme that “unlocks” fat cells so that their contents can be emptied out.
Important to note, Pu'Er tea is not a fad diet or miracle cure. Using Pu'Er to lose weight, like all other traditional methods, requires persistence and determination. You will not notice results in an instant. Instead, you will experience gradual improvement of your energy levels, overall well being and last but not least, gradual weight loss. In one French study, participants recorded weight loss was from five to ten pounds over a two-month period. To achieve best possible results, follow a healthy diet and exercise regularly in addition to your teatox, and drink Pu'Er tea about an hour after each meal (or simply after breakfast or lunch) to reduce the amount of fat that is retained and stored from your meal.
Reduces Stress and Helps with Sleep
While Pu'Er tea has caffeine, it may seem odd that this tea would assist with sleeping. However despite the caffeine, the key micro-organisms and phyto-chemicals Pu'Er tea contains, GABA and theanine, have been shown to reduce stress levels and increase the production of natural melatonin in the brain, resulting in decreased stress, stabilized mood and improved sleep patterns.
Prevention of Illness
Like most teas, Pu'Er has been shown to contain antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. Antioxidants are natural phyto-chemicals that help the body fight off free radical molecules and prevent diseases. The antioxidants that are found in Pu'Er are often in a higher concentration than in most other teas due to the fermentation process that the tea undergoes prior to steeping.
What is Cistanche?
Cistanche or rou cong rong is an herbal tonic made from the root or leaves of a desert plant called Cistanche deserticola that has been part of traditional Chinese medicine for nearly 2000 years. The traditional belief is that cistanche is a yang tonic with counteracts the effects of aging, increases sexual potency, and improves mental function.
In fact, the American Herbal Products Association has labeled Cistanche a class one herb. That means it is completely safe when used appropriately. If you take a normal dosage of cistanche powder or tonic, you should experience no side effects. Yet like all medicines, cistanche can have both positive and negative side effects which are outlined below.
So What are the Positive Side Effects from Cistanche?
In traditional Chinese medicine, Cistanche is regarded as a yin or jing enhancer which means it increases the flow of blood to various parts of the body. Those parts include the genitals which is why it has traditionally been used to enhance sexual performance in China.
Scientific studies indicate that the traditional Chinese belief about Cistanche is true. It does increase the blood flow which can increase overall health, strength, and vitality.
Some of the positive side effects of Cistanche include the following:
• Speeds up the healing process and aids in recovery from wounds and surgery by increasing levels of human growth hormone and nutrients flowing to tissue.
• Improves mental functions including clarity and memory by increasing the flow of blood and nutrients to brain cells. It might help reverse or at least delay the effects of age-related mental health problems such as dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.
• Can ease lower back pain and knee pain by increasing the blood flow to those areas of the body.
• Can improve the performance of the immune system and speed up recovery for infections.
• Improve bowel movements and constipation by increasing the flow of blood to that area of the body.
• Enhance sexual performance by increasing the blood flow to the genitals.
• End or at least ease sexual dysfunction such as lack of erection and premature ejaculation.
• Improve the function of the liver and kidney and enhance the body’s ability to cleanse itself of toxins.
• It might be an effective treatment for anemia or low blood pressure.
• Cistanche could be an effective treatment for fatigue or the effects of fatigue.
Potential Negative Side Effects of Cistanche
Even though it is regarded as an extremely safe herbal supplement, there are some potential negative side effects associated with cistanche. These side effects are limited and some of them are only potential.
Something that all cistanche users should be aware of is that studies into the effects of these herbs are limited. In particular, there has been little or no research into its reaction with drugs and with other supplements.
Despite the lack of research, some potential negative side effects from cistanche have been identified including these:
• It could increase blood pressure and have adverse effects on those who have high blood pressure or are taking medication for it. If you have high blood pressure, you should definitely ask your doctor before taking cistanche.
• Some doctors believe cistanche can make diarrhoea and other stomach problems worse. That means you should stop taking it if you have such a problem.
• It is possible that some people will be allergic to cistanche. It’s always a good idea to take a small dose of a supplement to see how you react to it before using it on a regular basis.
• If you’re regularly taking other drugs or supplements, it might be a good to ask a doctor or a practitioner of traditional Chinese medicine about potential reactions to cistanche.
• There are studies that indicate cistanche might lower blood pressure in some individuals. It might raise it in others.
Some other Benefits of Cistanche
Studies indicate that cistanche can be effectively used to treat a variety of health problems including the following:
• Lower back pain
• Knee pain
• Constipation
• Premature ejaculation
• Impotence
• Infertility
• Low blood pressure
• Memory loss
Since it increases energy levels, cistanche might also be effective as a treatment for fatigue and fatigue-related problems. Another possible use for it could be to treat arthritis and the effects of infections such as yeast infections.
