The adoption of a new type of back-illuminated CMOS sensor has made it possible to efficiently capture light despite the camera’s small size. Featuring a wide range of sensitivity settings (up to ISO6400) and a high pixel count of approximately 12.4 effective megapixels, the Q10 achieves high-resolution images with superior definition and tonal gradations.

The Q10 imaging engine maximizes the capabilities of a back-illuminated CMOS sensor with outstanding high sensitivity. This high-performance engine suppresses noise while delivering clear details with rich tonal gradations.

With the advanced Q mount developed exclusively by PENTAX, we have created a “nano” size interchangeable-lens system that achieves both compact size and high performance. In addition to the 6 exclusive Q-mount lenses, with the special adapter (optional Adapter Q for K-mount Lenses), it is possible to use almost all of the extensive range of K-mount lenses.

The High-Performance Lens Series includes the 01 Standard Prime, the 02 Standard Zoom, and the new high-magnification 06 Telephoto Zoom. In addition, the Unique-Lens Series includes three lenses: the Fish-eye, the Toy Lens Wide, and the Toy Lens Telephoto. Compact and easy to carry, these lenses will expand the fun you can have taking pictures.

Shutter speed settings as fast as 1/2000 second are possible. You can freeze the instant of a moving subject (sports scene, water fountain, etc.). In addition, with high-speed continuous shooting at up to 5 frames/second, you can capture the decisive moment within a series of movements.

The SR sensor-shift in-body shake reduction system effectively suppresses blurring in shake-prone conditions such as low-light indoor scenes and telephoto shooting. By entering the focal length, shake reduction can be used even with lenses other than Q-mount lenses.

Dust and dirt adhering to the CMOS sensor can be removed using ultrasonic vibrations. It can be operated when you choose or set to automatically activate when the camera is switched on and off.

The 3 lenses in the High-Performance Series (lenses 01, 02 and 06) have an ND filter that reduces light intensity without affecting image colors. It is convenient when you want to shoot with larger apertures or slower shutter speeds. It can be easily turned on/off with a camera setting.

RAW-format images can be developed in the camera and saved in JPEG format. Without using a PC, you can easily make fine adjustments and corrections and change the aspect ratio. In addition, if the last captured image is in JPEG format, with the buffer RAW save function, you can save it as a RAW-format file.

You can attach a PL filter to minimize unwanted reflections from water, glass and other reflective surfaces. The filter effect can be checked on the monitor as you shoot.
• High-Performance Series lenses only (01, 02 and 06)

The built-in P-TTL flash is synchronized to shutter speeds as high as 1/2000 second and covers an angle of view as wide as 28 mm (in 35 mm format). It also features slow-speed synchronization, which can capture both the subject and background in proper exposure in sunset scenes, and trailing curtain synchronization, which can naturally capture the trail made by a car’s lights. The flash can be used in both the pop-up and retracted positions.

The Q10 focuses quickly and accurately by detecting 25 focus areas on the subject. You can shift the focus area and change the size, and you can select the AF method (face detection, tracking, spot, etc.) that best fits your situation. The AF assist light aids focusing for dark scenes.

This function emphasizes the outline of the subject in focus. Since this makes it easier to check the peak focus position, it is convenient when shooting with manual focusing (MF) using a Unique-Lens Series lens (03, 04, or 05) or a K-mount lens. You can also use the MF Assist function to focus precisely by magnifying part of the screen.
• To attach a K-mount lens, Adapter Q for K-mount Lenses (option) is necessary.

Emphasizing easy viewing, the Q10 has a wide-view 3.0-inch LCD monitor with a field of view of approximately 100%. It features an extensive range of functions to assist shooting, including a grid display to facilitate image framing, a histogram display to indicate brightness-level distribution, and the Bright/Dark Area warning function.

To the Green button on the back of the camera, you can assign a frequently used shooting function, such as the Preview function, the One Push File Format function to simultaneously record both RAW and JPEG images, and the Enable AF function for thumb-triggered AF operation.

With one touch you can make the subject stand out by blurring the background and surroundings. Just set the mode dial to BC (Blur Control) and the Q10 will determine the focus and the distance to the subject and create an image with the foreground and background blurred.

With the HDR (High Dynamic Range) Capture function, the camera consecutively shoots 3 images (underexposed, standard exposure and overexposed) and combines them into a single composite image. With gradations preserved in both light and dark areas, the result is an image with a“naked-eye” feel. Since the Q10 has an automatic alignment adjustment function, you can use HDR even during handheld shooting.

With Auto Picture (AUTO), the camera automatically selects the optimum mode (Portrait, Night Scene, Sunset, Landscape, etc.) for the scene you are shooting. With Scene Mode (SCN), you can select the mode from among 21 scene modes (Night Snap, Surf & Snow, Pet, etc.).

The D-Range Setting options enable you to preserve gradations even in high-contrast scenes by expanding the dynamic range. You can specify Highlight Correction to prevent overexposure and Shadow Correction to prevent the underexposure that tends to occur in shadows.

Shooting at a maximum sensitivity of ISO6400 is possible. Since this makes it possible to use a higher shutter speed, you can minimize camera shake and subject movement. The combination of a high-performance imaging engine with a new back-illuminated CMOS sensor with outstanding high-sensitivity characteristics enables the Q10 to shoot with low noise even at high sensitivity levels.

With Noise Reduction you can shoot with minimum noise even at high sensitivity levels. In addition to Auto, where the camera selects the optimum settings, you can also specify uniform use of Low or High.

In addition to AWB (Auto White Balance), which automatically adjusts white balance for a variety of light sources, you can preset 8 white balance setting options, including CTE, which strengthens the color tone of the light source, and manual, which allows you to measure the white balance at a selected location.

You can switch the metering method to fit the subject and shooting style. In addition to Multi-segment, which determines a suitable exposure even under complex lighting conditions, you can also select Center-weighted metering or Spot metering.

You can shoot high-quality full HD 30 fps movies with any of the lenses. Smart Effect and Custom Image functions can also be used. In addition, it is possible to edit movies in the camera and to capture and save a still picture from a movie. There is also a new function that performs autofocus if you hold down the OK button while recording a movie.

You can choose from 4 aspect ratios to get the best fit for the subject and the finished image. In addition to the standard 4:3 ratio, you can switch to the square 1:1 ratio for a composed and orderly impression, the 3:2 ratio for a 35 mm film feel, and the 16:9 ratio for a powerful, sweeping view.

You can save 4 settings from 1 category (Smart Effect, Aspect Ratio, etc.) to the quick dial on the front of the body. Then, by just turning the dial, you can easily load your favorite effects.

Multi-exposure makes it easy to take 2 to 9 shots and combine them into a single image. After each shot, you can check the composite image on the monitor so that the final picture matches your expectations. You can also have the camera automatically optimize the exposure after the images are combined.

By automatically shooting images at a fixed interval, with Interval Shooting you can observe the changes over time of flowers blossoming, people walking, and stars moving across the sky. You can also enjoy Interval Movie, which creates a single movie file of still images shot at a fixed interval.

With Q10 capture modes such as Aperture Priority (Av), Shutter Priority (Tv) and Manual (M), you have all the shooting power of a digital interchangeable-lens camera.

You can easily shoot images with striking effects (subdued atmosphere, intensified colors, etc.). There are 9 effect variations. Save your favorite effects to the quick dial, and then load them with just a turn of the dial to conveniently shoot highly original images.

With Custom Image, before shooting you can select from 11 creative finishing tones, such as Radiant, which gives a glossy, glamorous finish. With the artistic finishing options of Digital Filter, you can preset 19 filters, such as Posterization, which gives the image a hand-drawn feel. It is also possible to combine multiple digital filters.
