Shea Butter is an off-white or ivory-coloured fat extracted from the nut of the African shea tree. The saponifiable fraction of Shea butter is composed mainly of stearic acid and oleic acid while the unsaponifiable fraction is composed of bioactive substances that are responsible for its medicinal and dietary values. Shea butter is a solid at room temperature and melts at body temperature, thus making it an useful ingredient for skincare and cosmetic products. Shea butter is edible and is used in food preparation in Africa. Shea Butter is also used as a substitute for Cocoa Butter in chocolate industries.
 

Uses

1. Skincare and cosmetic
As an emollient and skin moisturizer: Due to its semi-solid characteristics  and  buttery  consistency,  Shea  butter  is  great emollient  and  moisturizer  for  the  skin,  scalp  and  hair  even  without  further  processing.  It is  easily  formulated  in  creams  or  surfactant  based products such as bath products and shampoo to provide the skin,  scalp,  and  hair  with  well-maintained  or  increased moisture. Shea butter melts at body temperature, acts as a "refatting" agent, has good water  binding properties and  absorbs  rapidly  into  the  skin;  making  it  useful for  skin care. Conditions that Shea Butter is useful includes: Cracked Heels, Dry Cuticles, Dry And Chapped Lips.
1.1  Shea butter  is used for  repairing  dry  inflamed  skin  caused  by dermatitis, eczema and as a night time moisturizer for hands and feet.  A daily  application maintains a very good miniaturization of the superficial layers of the skin.
1.2 Shea butter superior to mineral oil at preventing trans epidermal water loss.
1.3 Anti-aging properties: Shea butter,  which  is anti-photon aging, helps  tissue  cell

2. Hair Care
2.1 Styling: due to it semi solid texture, Shea Butter can be used in place of hair cream to hold frizzy and loose hair, instead of using commercial hair pomade products, try out Shea Butter.
2.2  Hair conditioning: Shea Butter moisturises the hair reducing breakage and soften hair cuticles. It is also beneficial for split ends and reducing frizz.


3. Effect on Cholesterol  metabolism:  Shea  butter  has  been reported  to lower serum cholesterol by forming mixed micelles with  cholesterol  and  bile  acids  in  the  intestine  thereby inhibiting its absorption and increasing its excretion.


4. Effect on protein metabolism: It has been reported that Shea Butter decreases the total protein concentrations of the hepatic and renal tissues as well as the serum.
