Cotton Count:

The number of pieces of thread, 840 yards long needed to make up 1 lb weight. 10 count cotton means that 10x840 yd weighs 1 lb. In the United States ones to 20S are coarse counts, and the cotton counts higher than 20S are considered medium and fine count. In China, 40S and above are considered high cotton count (高支棉)。

The higher cotton counts means better quality, and the cotton product can be made in thinner and softer way. Normally if the cotton count is higher, the cotton product will also have higher thread count and higher density. But for bedding product, it is recommeded that the cotton counts is not exceeding 40S, otherwise the product might be too thin and easy to be teared. So, to make bedding product, 40S is considered the best choice and regarded as high cotton count and high density material (高支高密棉).

Thread Count:

Thread count or threads per inch (TPI) is a measure of the coarseness or fineness of fabric. It is measured by counting the number of threads contained in one square inch of fabric or one square centimeter, including both the length (warp) and width (weft) threads. The thread count is the number of threads counted along two sides (up and across) of the square inch, added together.It is used especially in regard to cotton linens such as bed sheets, and has been known to be used in the classification of towels.

The thread count highly depends on the cotton count, which means only the material with high cotton count can make a product with high thread count. For example, 30S material can make a product with thread count 78*65; and 40S material can make a product with thread count 110*90, 128*68 or 133*72. If the cotton count is same, higher thread count is better with higher density.
