Please be aware of that Magnesium is easily oxidised. So the rod maybe not good looking when you receive it.


It is covered with a grey colored magnesia veneer.


This veneer is easy to scrape off in 1 or 2 scrapes to expose a shiny metal surface.
 
   Scrape off some shavings from the magnesium part, then scrape the ferrocerium rod. Throw the sparks to the magnesium shavings to start a fire.
