Sperm motility describes the ability of sperm to move actively, a factor that is considered when determining the Fertilization capability of a Stallion. L-carnitine transports long-chain fatty acids into the energy producing mitochondria, where they are oxidized to create energy in the form of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) (1,3). ATP is a nucleoside used in cells as an intracellular energy transfer molecule that stores and releases energy as demanded by muscles. Atp acts as the cells main energy source and provides energy for metabolic processes as well as for cell motility and cell division. In some stallions, especially those with low sperm motility, this increase in energy may support higher sperm motility (1,2,3).
