Contact Lens Case
Do you know that it is important to consistently change your contact lens cases?
Contact lens cases can encourage bacteria growth if not cared for properly. Lens cases should be kept clean and replaced every 3 to 6 months. Inexpensive cases, or the ones included with contact lens care kits, are safe and sufficient.
After removing your contact lenses, empty the case and rinse with fresh contact lens solution (never use tap water). Cases should be cleaned after each use. Always allow the lens case to air dry. If the contact lens case gets cracked or damaged, discard it and replace it with a new one.
Care for Contact Lens Cases
1. Do I need to replace my case if it still looks clean?
Bacteria and other micro-organisms produce a substance called biofilm. Biofilms can form in a contact lens case, helping bacteria "hide" from the disinfectant in the contact lens solution. Biofilm cannot be seen by the naked eye; therefore, it is best to replace the case at least every three months.
2. How often should I replace my lens case?
The American Optometric Association recommends you replace your contact lens storage case at least every three months.
3. How should I store my lens case when I'm not using it?
After wiping the case dry, it should be stored in a clean, dry location with the case face down and caps off.
4. Where should I store my case at night? (i.e., not near the toilet)
Contact lens cases are at great risk for becoming contaminated when stored in humid environments, such as bathrooms. Lens cases should be stored in a clean, low humidity area.
5. How much solution should I put in my case?
Your lenses need to be completely immersed in the solution. To ensure enough disinfectant is present, the case should be completely filled.
