01. War and Peace

Starring: Audrey Hepburn. Henry Fonda. Mel Ferrer
Directed By: King Vidor

WAR AND PEACE is the story of Pierre Bezukhov (Henry Fonda). In the early 1800's, by benefit of his initially unrequited love of Natasha Rostov (Audrey Hepburn), and the sobering carnage of Napoleon's invasion of Russia, Pierre grows from a disolute young aristocrat into a mature, selfless Christ-like figure. He comes to want to help mankind, and finds worth in all the matters of life. His course is hampered by Prince Andrei Bolonsky (Mel Ferrer). Bolonsky takes Natasha away from Pierre, and he is the model soldier that Pierre is not (but feels, on some level, he should be). He compounds his problems with a bad marriage. Along the way, he deals with an estranged dying father, the warm life of Natasha's family, interlopers like Anatole (Vitorio Gassman), and wild spirits such as the martinet Dolokhov (Helmut Dantine). And we witness, often through Pierre's eyes, the surge and collapse of Napoleon's maximum effort.

Napoleon, a former corporal, had strode onto the European map when he was put in charge of the French Army in Italy in 1793. Nearly 20 years later, he had conquered or annexed most of the countries of Europe. Only Britain in the West, and scattered Russian and Austrian forces in the East, barred him from consolidating his gains. On June 24, 1812, he crossed the Niemen River into Russia. Like Hitler after him, he won battle after battle, but six months later, exhausted by cold and hunger, 20,000 of his 500,000 Grand Army straggled back to France. Winter, space and Russian resolve had defeated Napoleon. It is against these events that WAR AND PEACE plays out.

02. Breakfast at Tiffanys

Starring: Audrey Hepburn George Peppard
Directed By: Blake Edwards

In an idealized New York City during the early '60s, Holly Golightly (Audrey Hepburn) is a charming socialite with a youthful zest for life who lives alone in a nearly bare apartment. She has such a flippant lifestyle that she won't even give her cat a name, because that would be too much of a commitment to a relationship. Maintaining a childlike innocence yet wearing the most perfect of designer clothes and accessories from Givenchy, she spends her time on expensive dates and at high-class parties. She escorts various wealthy men, yet fails to return their affections after they have given her gifts and money. Holly's carefree independence is changed when she meets her neighbor, aspiring writer Paul (George Peppard), who is suffering from writer's block while being kept by a wealthy woman (Patricia Neal). Just when Holly and Paul are developing their sweet romance, Doc (Buddy Ebsen) appears on the scene and complicates matters, revealing the truth about Holly's past. Breakfast at Tiffany's was nominated for several Academy awards, winning Best Score for Henry Mancini and Best Song for Johnny Mercer's classic tune "Moon River".

03. Roman Holiday

Starring: Audrey Hepburn Gregory Peck
Directed By: William Wyler

Audrey Hepburn became a star with this film, in which she played Princess Anne, weary of protocol and anxious to have some fun before she is mummified by "affairs of state." On a diplomatic visit to Rome, Anne escapes her royal retainers and scampers incognito through the Eternal City. She happens to meet American journalist Joe Bradley (Gregory Peck), who, recognizing a hot news story, pretends that he doesn't recognize her and offers to give her a guided tour of Rome. Naturally, Joe hopes to get an exclusive interview, while his photographer pal Irving (Eddie Albert) attempts to sneak a photo. And just as naturally, Joe falls in love with her. Filmed on location in Rome, Roman Holiday garnered an Academy Award for the 24-year-old Hepburn; another Oscar went to the screenplay.
04. Funny Face

Starring: Audrey Hepburn. Fred Astaire
Directed By: Stanley Donen

This filmed version of the 1927 George Gershwin Broadway musical Funny Face utilizes the play's original star, Fred Astaire, and several of the original tunes, then goes merrily off on its own. Astaire is cast as as fashion photographer Dick Avery (a character based on Richard Avedon, the film's "visual consultant"), who is sent out by his female boss Maggie Prescott (Kay Thompson) to find a "new face". It doesn't take Dick long to discover Jo (Audrey Hepburn, who does her own singing), an owlish Greenwich Village bookstore clerk. Acting as Pygmalion to Jo's Galatea, Dick whisks the wide-eyed girl off to Paris and transforms her into the fashion world's hottest model. Along the way, he falls in love with Jo, and works overtime to wean her away from such phony-baloney intellectuals as Professor Emile Flostre (Michel Auclair). The Gershwin tunes include the title song, "S'wonderful", "How Long Has This Been Going On" and "He Loves and She Loves"; among the newer numbers is Kay Thompson's energetic opener "Think Pink". For years available only in washed-out, flat prints, Funny Face was eventually restored to its full Technicolor and VistaVision glory.

05. Sabrina

Starring: Audrey Hepburn. Humphrey Bogart. William Holden
Directed By: Billy Wilder

Billy Wilder directs the lighthearted romantic comedy Sabrina, based on the play by Samuel A. Taylor. Sabrina Fairchild (Audrey Hepburn) is the simple, naïve daughter of a chauffeur, Thomas Fairchild (John Williams). They live on an estate with the wealthy Oliver Larrabee (Walter Hampden) and his two sons: workaholic older brother Linus (Humphrey Bogart) and fun-loving younger brother David (William Holden). Sabrina adores the charming David, but he thinks of her as just a kid. Her father sends her away to Paris for chef school, where she meets Baron St. Fontanel (Marcel Dalio), and she returns a worldly, sophisticated woman. David immediately falls for her, but he is already engaged to marry heiress Elizabeth Tyson (Martha Hyer).
Sabrina wants to break up the wedding in order to finally catch the man of her dreams, while Linus fights to keep the marriage on in the interest of family business and Mr. Tyson's (Francis X. Bushman) fortune. In order to keep Sabrina away from David, Linus pretends to court her himself. In doing so, they eventually realize their true feelings for each another.
