Ipomoea tricolor is a beautiful flowering plant from the Convolvulaceae (Bindweed) family. It is considered to be native to the New World tropics, however has found itself naturalized in many other regions around the world. It is a herbaceous perennial and annual, which can grow to 4 meters tall. Its leaves are spirally arranged, and its flowers are trumpet shaped that vary in shades from vibrant blue to soft purple with a soft white-yellow to gold centre. The seeds of the plant are in pods that are produced once the plant has reached full maturity. The seeds have a very hard coating, which has to be nicked if the seed is to be used.

In cultivation, the species is very commonly grown misnamed as Ipomoea violacea, actually a different though related species. Numerous cultivars of Ipomoea tricolor with different flower colours have been selected for use as ornamental plants.
