In women, FSH helps to stimulate the growth of follicles in the ovary before an egg is released during ovulation. This test may help determine: - Whether a woman has entered menopause
- If a woman is producing eggs
- If a child is going through early puberty
In men, FSH works together with luteinizing hormone (LH) to stimulate the maturation of sperm cells and they should tell the testes to increase testosterone production. High FSH levels in males can indicate: - Damage to testicles from things like chemo radiation or alcohol abuse
- Andropause (male menopause or advancing male age)
- Testicular failure
Low follicle stimulating hormone levels in men can indicate an issue with the pituitary gland not working properly.
