Matcha, being rich in amino acids, specifically L-Theanine, leads to a state of relaxed alertness and helps relieve stress. Matcha contains up to five times more L-Theanine than common black and green tea. Although Matcha does contain caffeine, the calming effect of L-theanine knocks off the "jittery” effects of caffeine, thus promoting clarity of mind without causing nervous energy typically associated with coffee.
Since Matcha is carefully shade-grown, it has significantly higher levels of chlorophyll than other common green teas. Chlorophyll is known to be a natural detoxifier; it clears the body of toxins and heavy metals, and promotes the blood's capacity to deliver oxygen and other nutrients to cells.
According to a study featured in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Matcha consumption helps to increase body thermogenesis (the body’s rate of burning calories) from a normal 8-10% daily energy expenditure to 35-45% of daily energy expenditure.
The naturally occurring polyphenols known as catechins in Matcha are anti-carcinogenic and exhibits free-radical scavenging activity, thus inhibiting tumor cell development. One specific catechin called epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), a potent cancer fighter, makes up around 60% of the catechins in Matcha. Authentic Matcha provides a higher concentration of antioxidant catechins, including EGCG, than brew-able green teas.
Studies have suggested that green tea catechins may prevent cardiovascular diseases, and also lower the cardiovascular mortality rate.
Matcha green tea powder is rich in antioxidants, particularly Epigallocatechin Gallate (EGCG) which assists your body's production of T-Cells that reduce inflammation and fight pathogens.
We have all heard of, and probably tasted green tea. But for those of us who are fortunate enough to attend a formal Japanese tea creremony, we would know the green tea of green teas - Matcha. Matcha is the superfood of typical green teas. Used in formal tea ceremonies since ancient history in Japan, Matcha was consumed by Japanese royalty, monks and samurai warriors. Legend has it that ancient Samurai warriors drank Matcha tea as a pre-battle drink for increased energy and endurance for lengthy battles.
So, Matcha is NOT your typical green tea. Although both Matcha and green tea come from the same plant Camellia sinensis, Matcha tea is much more nutrient-dense than green tea. You will be able to recognize Matcha from its much brighter green color and better taste (almost no bitter after-taste). Comparing nutrients, 1 cup of Matcha tea = 10-15 cups of green tea, approximately.
The tea bushes for Matcha are grown in shade (sheltered from direct sunlight), thus leaving the leaves with a brighter shade of green and higher amounts of chlorophyll and L-theanine amino acid. L-theanine amino acid is known to reduce anxiety and stress, and when combined with caffeine, induces a calmer, yet more alert, state of mind.
The finest Matcha is produced from young and tender leaves hand-picked during the very first harvest of the season (first flush). The tea leaves are then steamed, dried and then milled into fine Matcha powder. First-flush Matcha is the Matcha of choice as it contains significantly more chlorophyll and amino acids (including L-theanine) than the leaves that are picked later in the season. The more chlorophyll, the more vibrant green the powder will be. And the more L-theanine amino acid, the sweeter (umami plant sweetness) the Matcha will taste. So, bitter-tasting Matcha is not first-flush high-quality Matcha.
Not all Matcha teas are the same. Nature’s Superfoods has sourced for the best-tasting and highest-quality Organic Matcha Powder from Kyoto - Ceremonial Matcha. Ceremonial Matcha is hard to find, and is not commonly used even in restaurants in Japan.. It uses the youngest, finest and most tender first-flush tea leaves, and is characterized by the subtle tones of "Umami” (plant sweetness), with almost no bitterness.
Ceremonial-grade Matcha is the highest-quality Matcha available and meant for those who just want to indulge themselves in the very best. Taken on its own, Matcha does not need added sweetener nor dairy products to make it palatable.
We also offer another quality of Matcha (premium grade), for those who love Matcha and must have it throughout their day. Our premium-grade Matcha has a slightly stronger hint of bitterness. Our Premium Matcha is also from first-flush tea leaves, just a grade lower (and more conveniently priced) than our ceremonial-grade tea leaves.
Both our Ceremonial Matcha and Premium Matcha are excellent nutrient-dense choices for tea drinkers.
