Chlorella is a blue-green algae known as Chlorella vulgaris, that flourishes in subtropical and tropical waters. It is well-known as a popular component in detoxification programmes and was researched in the Twentieth Century as a potential solution to possible global food shortages. Today however, it is gaining a reputation as a general dietary supplement for people wishing to support a healthy diet. Although Chlorella contains a broad spectrum of nutrients, it is notable for its provision of Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron and the magnesium-rich green pigment Chlorophyll. In powder form, Chlorella can be taken as a supplement in water, or incorporated into foods and smoothies.
