The Sarawak layer cake is a layered cake traditionally served on special occasions. In the Malay language, the cakes are known simply as Kek Lapis. These cakes originated from Indonesia. During the 60s and 70s, the Betawi people from Jakarta came to Sarawak and taught the people how to make these cakes. The Sarawak people added new ingredients, flavour and colour. Hence, a new version of the cake was introduced as the Sarawak layer cake.
