Whom You Will Help

Mr Teo Hock Soon, 77 years old, Dorcas Home Care Service
“Since a stroke 8 years ago, my wheelchair has become my constant companion. I did not want to stay in an elderly home and I managed to do so, with some help from Dorcas Home Care Service (Presbyterian Community Services). Staff deliver meals to my home every day, help with housekeeping and accompany me to my medical appointments.
However, as an elderly person living alone, one of my worst fears is dying alone. Earlier this year, I fell from my wheelchair and could not pull myself up. As I lay unable to move, I feared my worst nightmare was about to come true. Luckily, the driver delivering my meals discovered me in time. I am grateful to Dorcas Home Care Service for helping me to live independently.”

Abraham Isaacs D, 85 years old, Bright Hill Evergreen Home
“My siblings passed away many years ago – I’m the only one left. But, I can take care of myself.
I started the first security unit in Singapore in the 1950s, and they liked me because I can speak English, Malay, Tamil, even Hokkien! Even now they won’t let me go, because they say they can’t do without me.”
Abraham was last employed as a security guard, a job he worked in for 15 years. However, with his failing memory and deteriorating health, he could no longer continue in his job. After he was found homeless at Tuas Ave, he was referred to Bright Hill Evergreen Home, where the staff now take care of his daily needs and arrange activities to keep his mind active.
Mr Teo and Mr Abraham are two of the many lonely and frail elderly whom Community Chest will deliver the Festive Pack (Fú Dài) to. This year, Community Chest has extended this project to cover families in need, people with disabilities and children in homes as well. The full list is as follows:

Answering the Care & Share Movement’s call for donations and volunteers, more than 220 kind-hearted individuals and staff from corporate partners came together to pack for and distribute festive packs, or Fú Dài, to more than 1,000 frail and lonely elderly cared for by Community Chest’s supported charities, such as Bright Hill Evergreen Home, Thye Hua Kwan Home Help Services (West), AWWA Community Home for Senior Citizens, and Lions Befrienders.

Donations raised from this campaign were matched dollar-for-dollar by the government to build the capabilities and capacities of the social service sector to meet rising needs in the year of 2014.
One of the elderly beneficiaries from Lions Befrienders who received the Festive Pack (Fú Dài), 66-year-old Mr Chia Hood Teck, said, “I am grateful to Community Chest’s donors for the bag of canned food and daily necessities given to me. I am happy to know that old folks like me are not forgotten during this Chinese New Year.”

About the Care & Share Movement
