The Goji Berry (Lycium Barbarum) or Wolfberry, originated in Asia and is renowned for its various medicinal benefits. Goji berries have been consumed for more than 3,000 years. The Lycium Barbarum species is the most studied and is thought to contain the most vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. There are several existing species of Goji Berries and the species closest to Lycium Barbarum is Lycium Chinense, which is considered a "functional food” (medicine/natural food). It is the Lycium Barbarum species, however, that remains the most commercialised. The plant can reach heights of up to 3 metres, and grows mainly in humid areas, especially in temperate climates          

The Goji Berry (Lycium barbarum) is a very powerful antioxidant (which is also the reason for its reputation as the key to eternal youth).  The Goji Berry is extremely rich in nutrients. Along with along with Sea Buckthorn and Acerola, it contains one of the largest quantities of vitamin C of any fruit in the world. It is reputed to contain 400 times more vitamin C than oranges (that is for the fresh berry, and not for the dried berry, which contains about 7 times more than oranges and 2 times more than kiwi). It also contains numerous other vitamins: A (beta-carotene), B1, B2, B6, E, as well as 18 kinds of amino acids (among which 8 are essential), as well as a large number of polysaccharides to the amount of 40% (such as rhamnose, xylose, mannose, arabinose, galactose, beta-carotene, and zeaxanthin). Its composition is strengthened by the presence of numerous trace elements and minerals (21 in total) including iron, copper, selenium, phosphor, calcium and finally zinc. Finally, Goji berries (Wolfberry) contains numerous proteins (reputed to be 15% more than the protein contained in whole wheat). The success of Goji berry has rested on its reputation as the most nutritious, most complete and most antioxidant fruit in the world – thanks to these qualities, it has become known as a fruit of eternal youth. However, in order to enjoy these benefits, the quality of the berries must be high and their consumption must extend over a long time frame.
