Tongkat Ali, otherwise known as Eurycoma longifolia, has long been used by indigenous populations of
Southeast Asia for its health benefits.

It is now a common ingredient in many of the region’s coffees and energy drinks. Tongkat Ali produces an extremely bitter taste, due to one of the plant’s most biologically active components, quassinoids.

In traditional practice, Tongkat Ali is believed to stimulate sperm production as well as enhance fertility,
sexual prowess and male libido. In Southeast Asia it is widely thought that a particular constituent of
Tongkat Ali – a concentrated quassinoid called eurycomanone – can increase testosterone levels.

This constituent has been observed to exhibit antiestrogenic effects in rats and to increase testosterone levels.

In a small-scale trial, Tongkat Ali was also observed to reduce symptoms of low testosterone and increase testosterone levels in men with late-onset hypogonadism (a condition where the body makes little or no testosterone).

Tongkat Ali and its constituents are being investigated for their potential use in treating idiopathic sterility,
male infertility and low testosterone levels.
