Not too many, but more than the typical 12. The pencils come pre-sharpened, which is great. So many times the lead on pencils keeps breaking, and you sharpen them and lose all of your pencil because the lead breaks inside the wood. These seem to have stronger lead for drawing and sharpening. First I bought the set of 12 just to try since I am just getting my feet wet with adult coloring. When I bought the Country Scenes coloring book I ordered the 24 pack of pencils. These work really well. You can control the lightness or darkness by pressure or going over the same section. I have even used one color on top of another which gives a nice effect. I have sent these pencils to 2 sisters and a friend. You will need a pencil sharpener if you plan to color a lot. My sister tried a knife but said she was not successful. I use an old makeup pencil sharpener and it works fine.
