古书有[弥月为期, 百曰为度] 的说法, 即产后1个月为[小满月], 3个月为[大满月], 故广义的[月子] 时间, 指1~3个月.
民间称产后1个月为[满月], 即从分娩后算起一个月, 为坐月子的基本时间长度.
医学上称这段调养身体, 使生殖器官恢复的时期为[产褥期], 时间约为6~8周.
无论中西医均主张在这段时间里, 产妇需要有充分的休息, 补充均衡的营养, 以及注意个人卫生, 调养好身体, 生理机能才能更快回复最隹状态.

Tonification is a therapeutic treatment that nourishes and replenishes the qi, blood, yin and yang of the human body when they are deficient or weak. It is applicable to one or several of the organs, or one of the qi, blood, yin and yang, or the weakness of all of them as a whole. This is a method, unique to TCM, to sustain and restore the harmony of the body.
As the old Chinese saying goes "Confinement well done, your troubles thereafter are none."
The confinement period is a time when physical changes that occurred in the last nine months will revert to the original state. This is a period when the nutritional demands on you are high, due to the recent blood loss from the delivery and the demands of breastfeeding.
The belief here is that the mother has been "cooled” by the delivery, and there is a need to eat "heating” foods such as Herbal Tonic Soup. Many "confinement foods” have been devised to ensure that these nutritional demands and beliefs are met.
Whatever your beliefs are, it is important to have a well balanced diet rather than specific food types to replenish the body’s stores. This is especially so during breastfeeding.
