Mid Autumn Festival is held and celebrated on the 15th day of the Eight Month in the Chinese Calendar. Celebrating Mid Autumn Festival on the night of full moon is a Chinese Tradition. For Chinese, the shape “round” symbolises unity, and thus Chinese enjoy eating Mooncakes during this Festival. Family members gather and senior members would cut and distribute mooncakes in small pieces to family members, signifying family unity and reunion.
In addition, the there is also a tradition to share and consume Pomelo(文旦柚)during this Festival. In addition to the Mooncake Tradition for family unity and reunion, Chinese also wishes for“保佑”(which means bless and protect) during this Festival. Blessing and protecting family members. In Chinese, the reading “柚”(Yòu) and“佑”(Yòu) sounds alike and hence, having the meaning of bless and protect.
In Taiwan, Pomelo has a long cultivation history of 290 years. The Pomelo is famous due to the landscape and characteristic of Taiwan’s Soil. In addition, Pomelo Trees are grown in the well-defined four season weather at Taiwan. Sufficient water supply in Spring and Summer, dry and low temperature during Autumn and Winter, is the reason to well flavoured and fine textured Taiwan Pomelo. Their uniqness makes them taste different from the ones from Malaysia. They are harvested in September once a year and the fruit is specially enjoyed during Mid Autumn Festival.
Wishing your family an enjoyable Mid Autumn Festival.
