About Burt's Bees
The Greater GoodMost companies look out for the bottom line. Burt's Bees does, too. In fact, they have a triple bottom line: people, profit, planet. You can't have one without the other two. So when they look after their own, they mean everybody: their employees, their customers, their families, themselves. And yes, the environment, too. Burt's Bees ingredients - right down to the packaging - are simple, natural, and responsible. They practice what they preach - and hope to set the example for others to follow. It's called The Greater Good. And it's how they're going to help change the world.
Philosophy - Nurture the Life of Your SkinYour skin is beautifully alive. It's a living, breathing thing - your body's largest, loveliest organ - and when it's healthy, it shows. Just as the right mix of foods from the earth nourish your body, the right mix of ingredients from the earth help nourish your skin, giving it a fresh vitality that comes from balance. From the care taken in selecting each ingredient, to the feeling you get from using them, Burt's Bees formulas nurture the life of your skin. They harness the power of nature to help your skin work beautifully.
Nature as LaboratoryThe natural ingredients Burt's Bees sources aren't born in test tubes. Why would they, when nature has billions of years of research to tap into! Blooming and evolving, brilliantly and resiliently for ages, plants have had to continually adapt, developing their own chemistry to maintain vitality in the face of changing seasons and environmental conditions - dryness, humidity, sun, cold. Your skin weathers similar challenges over the course of its life.
You've evolved with nature, relying on the plants around you. In fact, human DNA is more similar to plants than different. For example, did you know that you share about 60% of the same DNA as a banana plant? The skin's own oil, sebum, has similar components to certain plant oils such as jojoba oil. Burt's Bees selects ingredients like these that are skin-friendly yet powerful. It's like re-connecting your skin to its original, natural life-source.
Do-Gooding is ContagiousIn 2007, the Burt's Bees Greater Good Foundation was established - a 501(c)(3) non-profit, organization dedicated to sustaining charitable, grassroots initiatives that support human and honeybee health. Since its inception, the foundation has issued over $1.2 million in grants.
'Working together, we accomplish more.' That was true when Burt's Bees started, and it's certainly true today (maybe truer than ever). They support sustainably-minded partners, as well as their local Durham community, through funding and volunteer time. They even give employees paid-time off for community service. These partnerships are a cornerstone of their outreach initiatives, giving them the resources, manpower, and motivation they need to go out and do good for their global neighbors.
History - Burt ShavitzIt was the summer of '84, and Maine artist Roxanne Quimby was thumbing a ride home (back when you could still do that sort of thing). Eventually a bright yellow Datsun pickup pulled over, and Roxanne instantly recognized Burt Shavitz, a local fella whose beard was almost as well-known as his roadside honey stand. Burt and Roxanne hit it off, and before long, Roxanna was making candles with unused wax from Burt's beehives. They made $200 at their first craft fair; within a year, they'd make $20,000. Pretty auspicious beginning - but just the beginning, all the same.
From those first candles to the iconic beeswax lip balm we all know today, Burt's Bees has stayed true to a very simple idea: what you put on your body should be made from the best nature has to offer. Burt's Bees invites you to stick out a thumb and follow them on their uncommon journey - it's been one heckuva ride.
