For locks, gears, hinges, and etc. a large flake (100-400 microns, 0.1-0.4mm) graphite better fills the rough surface voids to reduce friction. These same large flakes act like a grit on Pinewood Derby cars, slowing your car down. With polished metal surfaces a small flake lubricant (5-50 microns, 0.005-0.05mm) is needed to produce the best track performance. These fine flakes easily fill the micro imperfections in your wear surfaces and produce a surface film, keeping the two sliding surfaces from coming in contact.
