Confused over AAA, Grade A, Hom Mali, Premium? Are they all the same?

Thailand’s Ministry of Commerce, Department of Foreign Trade grades fragrant rice in terms of Grade A, and Grade B.

Grade A is the highest grade accorded, consisting of close to 100% fragrant rice grains.

Grade B rice has 80% fragrant rice and the remaining 20% consists of other types of rice.

“Hom Mali” means fragrant rice in Thai.

The Hom Mali brand is reserved for use in Grade A and B Hom Mali rice.

AAA and Premium have the same meaning as Grade A Hom Mali rice.

The term ‘AAA’ belongs to the old grading system that many rice buyers in the 1960s and ‘70s used.
