Both work well. I always put either a newspaper under the page or a magazine so it doesn't bleed through. I would recommend to to every age especially adults. So much, that I went back to the store and purchased a few more to give away as gifts. They work well for young kids experimenting with color blending, as well as adults, looking for some zen time. You really can't go wrong with these, and will create lovely work, no matter what your artistic ability is. The paper is a bit strange, it won't absorb color easy. Very pretty, I wish the lines were a bit bigger and the paper easier to work with.
