1. Paraben, Methylparaben and propylparaben: Used in a variety of cosmetics as preservatives. Parabens are endocrine disrupter that mimic estrogen and have been linked to breast cancer and reproductive system defects. They can easily be absorbed into the blood stream and are especially dangerous for babies in utero when used by pregnant mothers. Traces found in breast tumours. Used in most major cosmetics and skincare brands.
2.Phthalates: Phthalates are chemicals added to personal care products to give substances a 'smooth' effect and to help the fragrance last longer. Phthalates are endocrine disruptor's. Health issues related to toxic phthalates include increased risk of miscarriage, male reproductive development impairment such as undescended testicles, enlarged prostates and reduced sperm count, and early onset puberty in girls. These reproductive abnormalities increase the risk of cancer in later life such as breast and prostate cancer. Toxic phthalates have also been shown to cause liver and kidney damage.
3. Formaldehyde-releasing preservatives: Look for DMDM hydantoin, diazolidinyl urea, imidazolidinyl urea, methenamine and quarternium-15 on labels. These preservatives release carcinogens into skincare.
4. PEGs: Used in many cream-based products. Look for “propylene glycol”, and ingredients with “eth” (e.g., polyethylene glycol) on labels.
5. Ethanolamine: Used to form emulsions. Ethanolamine's are "suspected of carcinogenic activity." In tests on lab animals they have been shown to cause tumors in the kidneys and liver, and can react with preservatives in toiletries to form other known carcinogens.
6. Volatile Alcohols: Denat. alcohol is used to create illusion of absorption by skin. Used as solvents by dissolving the natural protective oils and moisture in your skin, denatured alcohol causes dryness, irritation and can cause severe skin sensitivity, leading to premature aging.
7. Mineral Oil/Petrolatum: Used as a moisturizing ingredient and moisture barrier. Derived from crude oil, mineral oil blocks the pores of the skin hindering normal respiration by keeping the oxygen out, as a result trapping toxins. Mineral Oil exacerbates skin disorders such as eczema.
8. Synthetic dyes: Look for coloring in product ingredients. No therapeutic value but stains skin over time.
9. Parfum/Perfume/Fragrance: Used in a wide variety of products. Top skin irritant and allergen, causes adverse reactions and skin sensitivity. Ujene uses natural rose water.
